Have a Plan
Business owners face many dilemmas in the event of an emergency: how to protect employees and asses their ability to return to work after a disaster; where to begin repairing a demolished building; and how to regain lost revenue. The best way to confront all of these concerns is to have a disaster plan. Plans need to encompass how employees will communicate, where they will go, and how they will be able to continue working. The policy’s details can vary greatly, depending on the size and scope of an organization and how the company operates. Businesses should decide which type of plan is necessary and which systems and businesses are most crucial to the company. When developing your outline, envision how a disaster would impact your employees, customers, and your actual workplace. Would you be able to contact employees to let them know alternate locations or when to return to work? Would your business be able to operate if your facilities were to close? How would you assist customers and keep your business up and running if your building flooded or collapsed? The Institute for Business and Home Safety has a helpful area-specific disaster-planning guide.
Safeguard Your Facilities
As with all Disaster Recovery, preplanning is crucial when it comes to protecting your business from any kind of interruption. Make sure to assess the impact a disaster would have on your building and ensure that your facility conforms to building codes. If you rent your company’s building, the Institute for Business & Home Safety recommends you review your lease for disaster provisions, and that you understand the extent of your personal responsibility if the building is severely damaged. To minimize destruction in the event of a disaster, The American Red Cross recommends bolstering your building before disaster strikes. Install shutters, automatic fire sprinklers, and flexible connectors to appliances and equipment fueled by natural gas. . .
